Dr. Adam Bonnington, MD is a Gynecologist in San Francisco who is passionate about working with transgender and non-binary patients. He joined MoZaic Care as a Surgical Associate in 2020 where he performs gender-affirming Hysterectomy and other bottom surgery procedures.

Dr. Bonnington specializes in transmasculine Hysterectomy and removal of ovaries (Oophorectomy). During this procedure the fallopian tubes are also removed, even if ovaries are preserved. This is the current recommendation of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology since they can be a source of cancer.
If you have questions about whether or not you should remove or retain one or both ovaries, Dr. Bonnington will be pleased to speak with you about this. Some considerations:
- Removing both ovaries decreases the risk of gynecological tumours, especially if there is a family history of the BRCA gene, and eliminates the development of ovarian cysts. Removing both ovaries also drastically reduces the production of estrogen, which greatly eases gender dysphoria for some people.
- Removing both ovaries results in a total loss of fertility. Those who wish to have their own biological children in the future have the option of egg retrieval prior to surgery or they can retain one or both ovaries.
- Retaining one or both ovaries also maintains natural hormone production, which may be helpful for those for who choose not to take testosterone, plan to stop taking testosterone in the future or have concerns about access to testosterone due to loss of insurance or health issues. If there's a family history of severe osteoporosis, retaining one or both ovaries may be prudent.
- If one retains one or both ovaries and stops taking testosterone, ovulation will return (for those who are pre-menopausal). After hysterectomy, removing ovaries and treating ovarian cysts and fibroids also becomes more technically difficult.

Surgery Requirements
Dr. Bonnington follows WPATH guidelines for surgery:
- You will need to provide two referrals from qualified mental health professionals.
- A letter from your hormone specialist stating you have been on 12 months of continuous hormones, unless clinically contraindicated.
- Minimum age of 18.
Booking a Consultation
Dr. Bonnington is available for in-person and phone consultations for a fee of $250 (in-person is preferred.) If Dr. Bonnington is in-network with your insurance, the consultation fee is the specialist co-pay. His current wait list for a consultation is 6 months.
